The only organ to which secular progressive political activists make little appeal these days—one could consider it America’s only understimulated organ—is the cerebrum. The brain. But when progressives do appeal to voters’ rationality, they wisely do so more primarily through story than through argument.
Yet, unfortunately, the progressive story is a “story” not only in the sense of a narrative but also in the sense of a lie. It is not based in reality and does not achieve what it promises. For that reason, over the next four years, American conservatives must out-narrate the political left.

A new narrative for American conservatives? That’s synonymous with a new narrative for Republicans, isn’t it? I fear that
Donald Trump’s death grip on the GOP is going to make that very difficult. As long as that lasts, and as long as most conservatives are Republicans, the narrative that emerges is likely to be skewed and mendacious.This is because the right has its own “cancel culture,” which makes it very dangerous for conservatives with integrity even to admit that Trump lost the 2020 election, or that the Capitol incident of January 6 was a serious event. You may wish–at your own risk–to offer a better narrative, but don’t expect Republicans to salute it when you run it up the flagpole.
